چکیده

The smuggling of special nuclear materials (SNMs) across national borders is becoming a serious threat to nonproliferation. This paper presents feasibility study on the rapid interrogation concealed SNMs by combining scattering and transmission resonance fluorescence (sNRF tNRF) spectroscopy. In sNRF spectroscopy, such as $$^{235, 238}$$ U are excited wide-band photon beam appropriate energy exhibit unique NRF signatures. Monte Carlo simulations show that one-dimensional scans can realize isotopic identification when detector array used for has sufficiently high resolution. simulated ratio $$^{235}$$ U/ $$^{238}$$ in good agreement with theoretical value enclosed relatively thin iron. followed tNRF spectroscopy using narrow-band goal obtaining tomographic images SNMs. reconstructed image clearly reveals position isotope inside an iron rod. It shown time one order magnitude lower than only results missed-detection rate 10 $$^{-3}$$ . proposed method also be applied imaging other $$^{239, 240}$$ Pu $$^{237}$$ Np.

Uncovering Special Nuclear Materials by Low-energy Nuclear Reaction Imaging

Weapons-grade uranium and plutonium could be used as nuclear explosives with extreme destructive potential. The problem of their detection, especially in standard cargo containers during transit, has been described as "searching for a needle in a haystack" because of the inherently low rate of spontaneous emission of characteristic penetrating radiation and the ease of its shielding. Currently,...
